Week 6 - Wednesday

I've been watching this new show since I'm kind of bored and I don't really have many other shows to watch. The show's name is Wednesday. Portrayed by Jenna Ortega, Wednesday Addams is the main character of this supernatural mystery series. It's set in a high school for outcasts called Nevermore Academy, which is attended by sirens, gorgons, werewolves, and vampires. Wednesday is forced to go to the school after she attacks her brother's school bullies with piranhas. Throughout her time at Nevermore, she discovers that a magical beast has been killing students in a gruesome fashion. She realizes that this beast is in fact a student and attempts to use her abilities and detective skills to figure out who the murderer is.

The show reminds me a lot of Harry Potter with all the magical creatures and abilities. Although no one in the series is really a wizard, they're all outcasts of normal, "muggle" society. Rather than muggles, normal people are often referred to as "normies". Unlike the Harry Potter series, the humans are well aware of Nevermore's existence and the students' supernatural abilities. They're often discriminated against and put under intense scrutiny, especially with the murders in the town. One particular moment reminded me of Harry Potter for some reason. In this scene, Wednesday is recruited for a school competition in which teams of students row a boat across a lake, retrieve a flag from a crypt, and then make their way back to the starting line. The team who makes it back first wins. If you've watched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, you might find the two scenes similar as well. In each scene, the students use magic and their abilities to give themselves advantages, each team cheating and manipulating the odds so that they can win.

I would not watch this show again. Or recommend it to others (unless you're bored and have not much to do). The show itself was okay, but I really like Jenna Ortega's character. I'm not completely finished with the show, but I've never seen her character smile or give an ounce of emotion. It's interesting how she's able to show no emotion through her face, yet her lines are still very well read and she's by far the most interesting character. Most of the other characters are not super interesting and often fit into their own high school stereotype. I put some down below if you'd like to guess which is which (it's pretty easy).

  1. This show seems pretty interesting, but I've always thought the spelling for "Wednesday" is weird, since the d is completely silent. In my opinion, it should be spelled "Wensday".
